While pulsating with ripeness, a bristling freshness and spine-tingling delicacy of texture make this basic bottling from Pierre Usseglio extraordinary. Red-plum and raspberry flavors are concentrated yet plush, etched by sweet spice and soft, mouthcoating tannins. The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape is the classic cuvée of the estate and is based on 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault that was raised mostly in concrete tank. It’s certainly worthy of a case purchase and has a gorgeous perfume of kirsch and blackberry fruits as well as loads of spiced meat, charcuteries, flowers, and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, round, and elegant on the palate, it has the more front end-loaded style of the vintage, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to drink well for at least 10-12 years.
