Raffaella Bissoni is a remarkable woman whom we first met in 2015. We had been told by the conoscenti that she has been leading a quiet revolution in Romagna to reinstate the region as an internationally reknowned producer of sangiovese. Given that Tuscany has long held the spotlight for all sangiovese wines we were both curious and skeptical. That was until we tried her wines. They are outstanding and represent excellent value. The winery now exports to 10 countries, with the USA being the largest taker.
Bissoni's wine-making philosophy is quite plain and hides no secrets: in order to preserve quality they limit yield to a low figure -6 tons per hectare- and harvest by hand at the best maturation time, using the greatest care and attention.
The 2019 sangiovese superiore is made expressly to highlight the ripe fruit characters of the grapes and to be consumed within 5 years of its making. Soft tannins wrapped around flavours of cherries, tobacco and exotic spice are the hallmarks of this wine.
