Decanter Magazine 94 points. Winery Note: It is a blend of Tempranillo (85%),Graciano (10%) and Garnacha (5%) grape varieties which are grown from very old vines. The harvest is done by hand and the grapes are transported to the winery in small 15kg boxes which ensures that they are not damaged before they reach the winery. The grapes are destemmed before fermentation and then placed in Allier wood vats for 11 days at a temperature between 24 to 28 degrees. They stay with their skins for an additional 25 days which contributes to the wines fine tannins and the final colour which lasts for a long time. The winery applies a daily pumping of...
4 Kilos Tierra de Mallorca Callet 2019 (Decantalo 95)
Guia Pen 95/100 Falstaff 93/100 Not rated by the Americans because of COVID. The 2018 was WA 96+, the 2020 was WA 97.. 4 Kilos is a red wine from Mallorca prepared by the 4 Kilos winery. 4 Kilos, a colloquial way of saying 4,000,000 pesetas, was the initial investment Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero made to start the winery. A modest investment in the sector which shows that good wine is not much money but has passion and ambition for quality. 4 kilos it's a wine made with Callet. A grape indigenous to Mallorca. 4 Kilos Tierra de Mallorca Callet 2020 (WA 97)
Wine Advocate 97 points. The eponymous red 2020 4 Kilos is a delicate, pure Callet bottled at 12% alcohol from 20- to 50-year-old, organically farmed vines in different vineyards on call vermell red soils in the village of Felanitx. It fermented in equal parts in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in third- and fourth-use 600-liter Allier oak barrels for 12 months. It's perfumed and elegant, with notes of dried rose petal and talcum powder, perfumed and spicy, with orange peel freshness. This is serious and balanced, not exuberant, it's even a little shy, insinuating and tasty in a very subtle way. It's clean and...

Artadi Valdejines 2018 (WA 94+)
Wine Advocate 94+. I had not tasted the 2018 Valdeginés unbottled, as I did with some of its siblings, but the east-facing plot that tends to deliver more Atlantic, cooler wines saw its character accentuated in the rainy and cooler 2018. The 4.1 hectares were planted between 1982 and 1989, partly on a slope that is quite shallow and with a base of sandstone and partly on some terraces where the soils are deeper and fresher. After a 24- to 48-hour cold soak, the wine fermented in open-top oak vats for some 10-12 days, during which time the grapes were foot trodden twice per day and there was a short pump-over. Malolactic was in barrique,...

Clos I Terrasses "Laurel" 2018 (WA 96)
Wine Advocate 96 points. The 2018 Laurel was produced with fruit from the younger vines, a couple of barrels that are declassified from Clos Erasmus and the Cabernet Sauvignon, more or less 70% Garnacha and 15% each Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has good ripeness and still a pH of 3.3. It fermented mostly in oak vats and 2,000-liter concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 18 months in 20,000-liter oak and concrete vats, second use barriques and some clay amphorae. It's a bright translucent ruby color and has a perfumed and delicate nose with notes of orange peel and flowers; this is the most elegant and ethereal vintage of...
Clos Martinet 2017 (WA 95)
Wine Advocate 95 points. The 2017s feel relaxed, something unusual in Priorat. The 2017 Clos Martinet has seen a change, as they stopped using the sorting table and stopped using the pied de cuve, because the harvest was very easy. They harvested in August—the earliest ever until 2018—and they didn't have time to do anything; so, they put the grapes in the vats and let them ferment, and that's what they have been doing ever since. They feel that there is less manipulation of the grapes now, and that could have helped to make wines more relaxed. This is truly harmonious and expressive, elegant and powerful, not showing any heat—in fact,...
Clos Martinet 2018 (WA 96)
Wine Advocate 96 points. The flagship 2018 Clos Martinet is the wine that started it all and is still a blend of Garnacha (Tinta and Peluda), Syrah, Cariñena, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell as it was since the beginning but now with a restrained 13.5% alcohol and higher acidity. Clos Martinet is a single five-hectare terraced vineyard planted with clonal material in 1986 on decomposed llicorella slate, iron and big rocks in the soil. The varieties are co-fermented depending on the date picked—at three different ripening times—in two concrete vats and 200-liter oak vats with indigenous yeast and whole clusters. The beginning...
Clos Mogador Manyetes Vi de vila Gratallops 2018 (WA 97)
Wine Advocate 97 points. The pure Cariñena 2018 Manyetes is now a Vi de Paratge, not only a village wine as in the past, in the new classification of the Priorat wines. 2018 was a cooler and wetter year, quite a contrast after the warm and dry 2017, and the wine has very good acidity. The vineyard is farmed organically (certified), the grapes have a slow fermentation with long macerations, and the wine matured in 50/50 barriques and foudres for 18 months. The wine is not as concentrated as it has been in some warmer years; it's definitely fresher, following in the line of the 2016, the wine with more marked minerality, black stones,...
CVNE Contino Garnacha 2019 (TA 93)
Tim Atkin 93 points. Contino Garnacha is a red wine from the D.O. La Rioja produced by the Contino winery. The grape harvest is carried out manually as soon as the bunches are at the optimum stage of ripeness. The grapes go through a double selection process: on the vine, and upon entering the winery. The harvested berries are left to ferment in French oak vats. Later, they are macerated for seven days, during which time, they carry out several 'plungings'. Malolactic fermentation takes place in second use barrels. Contino Garnacha rests in the barrel for two years before being bottled. #COMP
CVNE Contino Graciano 2017 (JS 96)
James Suckling 96 points. Tim Atkin MW 94 points. Contino Graciano is a single-variety Graciano red wine produced by the Bodega Viñedos del Contino in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Bodegas Viñedos del Contino started out in Laguardia in 1973, although the estate dates back to the 16th century. It is considered to have been the first to use the Bordeaux “Château” style in La Rioja, an idea driven by the CVNE centennial winery. Viñedos del Contino has 62 hectares of sandy-calcareous and clayey-calcareous soils with boulders and influenced by an Atlantic-Mediterranean climate. A “contino” is the name for a member of an honorary guard made up...
CVNE Contino Gran Reserva 2016 (TA 94)
Tim Atkin 94 points. Intense aromas of black fruit, red plums, blackberries and something liqueur-like. It gradually gains in complexity with spicy notes, nuances of cocoa and chocolate, liquorice and fine toasted notes appearing. In 1973, Cvne and the family who own the winery created the first Rioja "chateau". Viñedos del Contino forms a set of vineyards surrounding an old country house, in a curve of the river Ebro. Their wines are made exclusively from the vines planted in their 62 hectares of land, located in Laserna, near Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa. Contino Gran Reserva is made from grapes selected from the vineyards surrounding...
CVNE Contino Vina del Olivo 2017 (JS 95)
James Suckling 95 points..."a very strong and muscular red with very toned tannins that frame the blue fruit and wet earth. Subtle and cool. Structured and chewy. Shows power. Needs three to four years to soften." Contino Viña del Olivo is a red wine made by Bodega Contino. To make their wines stand out, and to pay tribute to a old olive tree found in the surroundings of the vineyards, they created Viña del Olivo, a modern but refined wine. This wine is made with Tempranillo (88%) and Graciano (12%) grapes, vigorously selected. The grapes selected are at their optimum ripening point and are picked by hand from the winery's vineyards...
CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja 2015 (JS 97)
James Suckling 97 points. Cune Imperial Grand Reserva is considered by some as one of the great wines of Spain. Its 2014 vintage was selected by the prestigious magazine the WineSpectator as the best wine in the world. It is a blend made from Tempranillo as the main variety with a small percentage of Mazuelo and Graciano. The grapes come from old vines planted 45 years ago in the town of Villalba. The harvest is done manually, a first selection of grapes is carried out, and they are transferred to the winery in small boxes that help keep the grapes in perfect condition. Once in the winery, the grapes are cooled and passed to a sorting table...
CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja 2017 (TA 95)
Timj Atkin MW 95 points. "Not everyone made good wines in 2017, a vintage that threw various curve balls at Rioja, not least the April frost, but Maria Larrea certainly did. This blend of Tempranillo with 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha is youthful vigorous and focused, with fine oak, a green undertone, lots of dark berry fruit and chalky minerality." TA. Cune Imperial Reserva 2017 is a mature red wine with a fragrant nose of ripe black and red fruits, notes of violet flowers and toasted, chocolatey hints. On the palate it’s fleshy, enveloping and elegant. A balanced wine with present acidity, velvety tannins and a long, ample finish...
CVNE Real de Asua 2016 (JS 97)
This is very powerful and rich with amazing depth of fruit and ripe tannins. Full body. Round and chewy tannins. Super depth and beauty in this pure tempranillo. Needs time in the cellar. Better after 2021. 97 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019). "CVNE has been on a roll lately, and this ace from a great vintage only helps to keep that roll going. Stout aromas of bramble, berry fruits, tobacco and fine oak are highly convincing, as is a muscled-up palate that's showing superb structure. Black-plum and cassis flavors are more up front delicious than complex, although further aging may flip the script. Best from 2023 onward. Michael Schachner" -...
CVNE Vina Real Crianza 2015
The Vina Real Crianza is an important wine for the CVNE group. Launched in the 1920’s and were at the time one of the pioneering wineries to use oak ageing for their Crianza. The Vina Real winery is in Laguardia, the heart of the Rioja Alavesa sub-region. It is made from 90% Tempranillo with the remaining 10% from the following: Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo. After 13 month in mainly American Oak the wine is bottled and further matured before release.
CVNE Vina Real Crianza 2016
CVNE produces some of the most well-known and respected wines in Rioja. The Vina Real Crianza is a fantastic example of their craft, made with 100% Tempranillo grapes from the Rioja Alavesa subregion. It spends 12 months in American and French oak barrels before being released, and it shows off lovely aromas of ripe berries, vanilla, and spice. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with elegant tannins and a long finish.
CVNE Vina Real Crianza 2018 (JS 93)
James Suckling 93 points. "This is really delicious, Orange-peel, blackberry and light bark aromas follow through to a medium-bodied palate with very fine tannins and a long, energetic finish. Racy is a good word to describe it. Vegan. Drink now and enjoy. But will improve with age." JS.
CVNE Vina Real Reserva 2015 (WA 93, JS 94)
Wine Advocate 93 points. The classical 2015 Viña Real Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from a warm and early harvest that fermented in stainless steel vats and aged in new oak barriques for 22 months with rackings every four months. I find it very expressive, aromatic and open, ripe and hedonistic but without excess. It has the soft and approachable profile of the Alavesa wines but with the grip of the fine-grained, chalky tannins. It's gentle but has clout. Delicious! LG Jun 2018. James Suckling 94 points. #DEC
Desciendietes de Jose Palacios Petalos de Bierzo 2020 (WA 93+)
Wine Advocate 93+ "The regional red 2020 Ptalos comes from 90 hectares of vineyards, mainly from Corulln and Villafranca del Bierzo and the districts of Viariz, Hornija, Valtuille de Abajo and Otero. It mixes expositions, altitudes and soils and wants to paint a picture of Bierzo in the warm 2020 vintage. They reckon it's 92% Menca with 5% other red grapes (Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda) and 3% whites (Valenciana, Jerez and Godello) with an average yield of 26 hectoliters per hectare. The grapes were picked from August 28th to September 24th and fermented partly destemmed in stainless steel and oak vats with...
Dominio de Pingus "PSI" 2019 (JS 94)
94 Points - James Suckling: "Blackberry and black-cherry aromas with lavender, cedar and hints of cloves and white pepper, following through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful, creamy finish. A little tight and reserved now. Another impressive PSI. Give it until 2022." (Sep 2021). Having established Pingus as a new benchmark for greatness in Spanish wine, Peter Sisseck has embarked on a new quest: to produce a wine that captures the soul of Ribera del Duero. And he intends to do so by harnessing the passion of the region's growers who have, for far too long, lacked the tools, capital, and vision to make wine that is...
Edulis Rioja Crianza 2018 (JS 90)
James Suckling 90 points. Edulis Crianza is a red wine from the Rioja developed by the Altanza winery. This winery, founded in 1998, is located in the town of Fuenmayor (Rioja Alta). Edulis Crianza is made from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes come from vineyards planted at an altitude of between 380 and 500m on clay-calcareous soils and ferrous clay. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28°C and lasts 12 to 15 days....
Finca Villacreces Pruno 2019 (WA 92)
Wine Advocate 92 points. The 2019 Pruno has some unusual aromas reminiscent of pine needles, balsamic and faintly herbal with moderate alcohol (they harvested early in this warm year) and with very good balance and harmony. The aromas and flavors are pure and defined, and it's tasty, easy to drink and has very fine tannins. Among the finest Pruno of recent times. LG Jun 2021. #JAN
Guimaro A Ponte 2018 (WA 95)
Wine Advocate 95 points. The red 2018 A Ponte comes from one of the family's oldest vineyards, though it was planted only 10 years ago, replicating the old varietal mix, going back to ancestral times with 30% Mencía and then equal parts of Caíño Redondo and Caíño Longo, Sousón, Brancellao and Merenzao. The soils are slate with iron, quartz and mica, and this plot has a southeast exposition (what does it bring). All the varieties fermented together with 100% full clusters in closed troncoconic vats with a 50-day total maceration time. The wine matured in a 5,000-liter oak vat for six months and then was moved to used barrels of...
Guimaro Camino Real 2019 (WA 94+)
Wine Advocate 94+. Camiño Real was a path from Doade to Castro Candelas only suitable for horses, not for carriages, that was said to have been used by the kings, hence the name, which means "royal path." The 2019 Camiño Real is a red to close the gap between the young unoaked wine and the reds from the single vineyards. It was produced with grapes from old vines in Amandi combining orientations, altitudes and soils. It's around 80% Mencía and the rest local grapes intermixed in the old vineyards that are always field blends—Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón, Caíño… It fermented with some 60% full clusters in troncoconic oak vats with...
Guimaro Finca Capelinos 2019 (WA 97)
Wine Advocate 97 points. The 2019 Finca Capeliños comes from a southwest-facing vineyard at 350 meters in altitude on schist soils, with nearly centenary vines with mixed varieties but dominated by Mencía. It fermented with 55% full clusters and a very long fermentations and a very soft vinification, almost like an infusion to try to not extract too much. For Pedro Guímaro, this is his favorite vineyard with a big varietal field blend. I love the restraint here; there's also great elegance and nuance, and it opened up faster than other 2019s. There is less fruit and more flowers, herbs and rocks here than in the 2020. This is always a...
Guimaro Finca Meiximan 2018 (WA 95)
Wine Advocate 95 points. The 2018 Finca Meixeman comes from one of their oldest vineyards and was produced with the varietal blend in the vineyard—80% Mencía and 20% Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón. Most of the reds from 2018 are 13% alcohol, which is lower than in the past and achieved through picking earlier. It fermented with 55% full clusters in closed vats, with a total maceration time of 50 days. It spent six months in 5,000-liter oak vats and then was transferred to used 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for malolactic and 12 to 13 months aging. This is serious and a little closed, more in the...
Guimaro Vino Tinto 2021 (WA 92)
Wine Advocate 92 points. The young red 2021 Vino Tinto is one of the first 2021 reds from Galicia that I taste from bottle. 2021 is supposed to be a return to the conditions of the vintages from yesteryear—cooler and with less ripeness, lower alcohol and more acidity but also viticultural challenges. This is always a sure value, and it is mostly Mencía with some 15% other local reds (Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha Tintorera, Mouratón, Negreda, Sousón, Caíño...) sourced from old vineyards. Wine Advocate 94 points. The 2018 Viñas Viejas follows the path of the 2016, floral and elegant. It comes from old vines in the village of La Aguilera, and it fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels and eight months in concrete. The wine shows very good precision and definition and is clean, aromatic and elegant, with great balance. It has the profile and character of the wines from yesteryear. From this vintage onward, they only use larger barrels for the élevage, and the oak feels better and better integrated. A Ribera of grace. 23,223 bottles and 347 magnums produced. It was bottled in April 2020. LG Jun...
Lindes de Remelluri Videos de Lambastida 2018 (WA 94+)
Wine advocate 94+. Produced with grapes from suppliers, the 2018 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida comes from a cooler and wetter year not without challenge. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels of different sizes and origins for 13 months. This is more reticent and serious, with a grainy sensation on the palate, beautifully textured. It has more austere tannins. This is probably the finest vintage for this wine so far. 2018 has produced many great wines. 87,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020. LG Aug 2021. #NEW
