The grape harvest is carried out manually as soon as the bunches are at the optimum stage of ripeness. The grapes go through a double selection process: on the vine, and upon entering the winery. The Vina Real Crianza is an important wine for the CVNE group. Launched in the 1920’s and were at the time one of the pioneering wineries to use oak ageing for their Crianza. The Vina Real winery is in Laguardia, the heart of the Rioja Alavesa sub-region. It is made from 90% Tempranillo with the remaining 10% from the following: Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo. After 13 month in mainly American Oak the wine is bottled and further matured before release.

CVNE produces some of the most well-known and respected wines in Rioja. The Vina Real Crianza is a fantastic example of their craft, made with 100% Tempranillo grapes from the Rioja Alavesa subregion. It spends 12 months in American and French oak barrels before being released, and it shows off lovely aromas of ripe berries, vanilla, and spice. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with elegant tannins and a long finish.

The classical 2015 Viña Real Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from a warm and early harvest that fermented in stainless steel vats and aged in new oak barriques for 22 months with rackings every four months. I find it very expressive, aromatic and open, ripe and hedonistic but without excess. Edulis Crianza is made from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes come from vineyards planted at an altitude of between 380 and 500m on clay-calcareous soils and ferrous clay. It comes from old vines in the village of La Aguilera, and it fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels and eight months in concrete. Wine advocate 94+. Produced with grapes from suppliers, the 2018 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida comes from a cooler and wetter year not without challenge. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels of different sizes and origins for 13 months. This is more reticent and serious, with a grainy sensation on the palate, beautifully textured. It has more austere tannins.
