This wine is new to my annual tasting repertoire and represents an exciting new discovery from Cantina Tramin. The 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Maglen opens to a mid-weight approach and a nice sense of concentration that remains impactful but elegant at the same time. The wine is redolent of cherry, cassis, pressed violets and blood orange. There are some distant notes of earth and smoke with crushed rock as well. This release of 12,000 bottles is a terrific performance from a first-rate winery.ML Sept 2021.

James Suckling 92 points. "Pronounced licorice, black-pepper and smoky aromas, as well as fresh black cherry. Good depth and a nice structure with some interesting, earthy and spicy notes. The finish is very harmonious, but not that long or complex. Drink or hold." JS.

WINERY NOTES:
Winemaking: Extended maceration on the skins at controlled-temperatures (24°C) in large oak vats. After aging in French barrels for 14 months, the wine is kept in bottle for nearly one year prior to commercial release.

Tasting Notes: While Pinot Nero is originally from Burgundy, the grape has found a second home in our province for more than 100 years. The best production areas for Pinot Nero are between Mazzon and Montagna. Maglen, our best Pinot Noir, is ruby in color with light garnet hues. It has scents of spice, cherry and sour cherry, and a delicate taste, clean, persistent and elegant, with good tannic structure. Aging potential 10 years.
