You get ample varietal tones in the 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni, with bitter chocolate and baking spice, but Caprai does a terrific job of softening up and fleshing out the Sagrantino grape to display a more contemporary and ultimately more approachable and versatile wine. 99 Pts James Suckling A stunning wine. This is the best Testamatta ever made. Fascinating aromas of red fruits, tea, bark and wet soil as well as fresh leather. Full body, silky tannins and a juicy finish. I love the tension and texture of this great red. So gorgeous to taste now but better in 2021. Suckling has long been a fan of Bibi Graetz and his old-vine Sangiovese, calling it: “one of Tuscany's true cult wines, Testamatta. After 18 months in barrique (with 50% new barrels), the wine is nicely enhanced with oak spice that comes across with subtle layers of toast and smoke; however, the wood regime is never overdone. In fact, the cool-climate freshness associated with mountain wines is what gives this hearty red that extra kick of energy to enjoy with a well-marbled steak on the grill. Wine Advocate 93+ The Cantina Tramin 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Maglen reveals a medium dark color with good complexity and robust aromas of dark cassis, wild cherry, black rose and grilled herb. Rated 96 by Vinous Media The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up with a classic Capanna profile, rich yet elegant, with masses of crushed black cherries, sweet herbs, cloves and hints of cigar box. This is velvety yet not weighty, with a salty core of minerals and brisk acids that enliven its citrus-tinged red berries and exotic inner spice. While persistent and structured, the 2016 keeps you coming back to the glass, savory and saline in character with grippy tannins, but also a tug of residual tension that keeps the expression unexpectedly fresh.
