"Etna has been the single most exciting development in Italian wine in the last decade, with Etna Rosso becoming Italy’s single hottest red wine".
Ian d'Agata (VINOUS).
Etna has become the most exciting up and coming region in Italy in the last decade and shares similar qualitative traits to the other great wine making Italian regions of Tuscany and Piedmont. Like Barolo and Brunello, the Etna red wines centres on a single varietal that has a great affinity to express terroir. The wine is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grown on volcanic soils that capture the vibrant mineral energy in the wine whilst expressing fragrant floral aromas and cherry fruits. It is often described as a cross between Burgundian Pinot Noir and Barolo. If you love great mineral driven classic Italian red wines you can no longer ignore the brilliant beguiling charms of Etna.
The pedigree of the wine is impeccable with fruit coming from pre-phylloxera, ungrafted vines that are between 80-100 years old. Light extraction and maceration is key to retaining the elegant silk-like tannins. Carlo Ferrini is widely regarded as one of the most influential winemakers in Italy, having consulted at some of the most famous wineries in Italy for almost 40 years. Starting to explore Etna’s potential in 2003 and consulting for wineries on Etna for the last 15 years, in 2010 he slowly began sourcing favoured parcels, until in 2016 he decided to produce his first wine from Etna under his own Giodo label.
