James Suckling 93 points. A Bindi side-project, this has a very complex, spicy nose with dark cherries, plums, boysenberries, tar and woody spices, such as cardamom and clove. There’s a very fleshy feel to the mid-palate with rich red-plum flavors, dusted in cocoa powder. Very polished shiraz. Plenty of flavor. JS. WINERY NOTES: We have been delving back into the Shiraz wines and having fun seeing the continuity of style going back two decades now. Nick and Gary Farr stand side by side, but aren’t afraid to go head-to-head when their opinions differ. Each generation has developed a distinctive winemaking style based on his individual experience and taste, and their respective lines—By Farr by Gary, and Farr Rising by Nick—have received critical acclaim both in Australia and overseas. Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone. All fruit is hand-picked from the VSP trellising, with 20 per cent left as whole bunches in the fermentation. Most years...

The wines are all 100% varietal, produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The vineyards are all ungrafted, planted on their own roots, most of them with very old vines. 100% new French barrels are used for the Merlot and Cabernets, and 50-100% new for the Syrahs depending upon the vineyard. The wines typically spend 18 months in oak prior to bottling without fining or filtration. All of the above 2006 bottlings were reviewed from barrel samples in Issue 173. The...

Wine Front 94 points. I’ve liked a great many of the previous releases of this wine but this is my favourite of the lot. It’s a ripper. Balanced, well fruited, spice-laden, perfumed, floral and then sweetly exotic. It smells and tastes beautiful, and is so finely etched with tannin; it has everything exactly where you’d like it to be. I’d send a case of this straight into the pool room but I’d like my stash kept a lot closer to me than that and, besides, I don’t have a pool room anyway. Buy. Wine Advovate 94 points. I think if I had to pick one Shiraz to epitomize McLaren Vale, the 2018 Hillside Shiraz would be a strong contender. Coming from one of the region's more traditional producers, it's a classic, offering up a complex, concentrated array of mixed berries and leavening those with herbal intricacies and savory undercurrents of black olives and cedary oak. Medium to full-bodied, it's ripe and velvety on the palate and long and mouthwatering on the finish. JC Aug 2021.

WA 98 The flagship of Kilikanoon is the 2006 Attunga 1865 Shiraz. Thick and rich, it coats the glass with glycerin. It gives up a brooding bouquet of wood smoke, game, truffle, espresso, leather, blueberry, and blackberry leading to a massive, masculine, full-bore Shiraz with dense, spicy fruit, a splendid integration of oak, tannin, and acidity, and a 60-second finish. It merits a decade of cellaring and will reward those with discipline with 25 years of pleasurable drinking from 2016 to 2041. JM Feb 2009

Wine Advocate 97 points. 'The 2005 Shiraz “Attunga 1865” is sourced from ungrafted vines planted in the Clare Valley in 1865. It spent 25 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque purple/black, it reveals an ethereal bouquet of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, espresso, mocha, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a powerful, intense, yet elegant wine with a very long, seamless finish. This beautifully balanced effort will excite tasters over the next 25 years. 'A mesh of premium vineyard fruit and an 18 month passage across quality French oak, this is a salubrious, full-bodied and glossy wine. A deep crimson verging on opaque. A firm bulwark of coffee grind-mocha tannins prolongs scents of violet, blue to black berry persuasions and crushed rock, long and far across the palate. The tannins define, etch and shape this, keeping it from an OTT persuasion. Just. Very good, if hedonism is your cup of tea’ Drink by 2035 James Halliday 95 pts. Wine Advocate 94 points. Wine Advocate 94 points. 2018 was a gorgeous year—the reds across the board in South Australia are ripe and red-fruited, with impressive vitality and energy. Here, the 2018 Covenant Shiraz is possessed of all the red-fruited buoyancy and pink peppercorn spice true to the season. Additionally, there is deli meat and exotic spice, and the oak (what oak?) sits behind it all, supporting the elevation of aroma and flavor. Very smart. Velvety. EL Sep 2022.

This slips down easily. Ripe/sweet redcurrant and plum flavours, pure and free, run evenly and openly through an uncomplicated palate. Talk about smooth. As dangerously drinkable as they come. 91 points. Campbell Mattinson Published 29 November 2022. WINEMAKERS COMMENTS The colour is a vibrant deep red with a ruby hue. Black fruit aromas with similar characters on the palate, which is luscious with nice spicy fruit flavours with hints of plum, nutmeg and gentle tannins with a generous finish. The Massena label was created as a self funded apprenticeship project between self-styled winemakers Jaysen Collins and Dan Standish. It is unique in concept and execution as the philosophy is to add NOTHING in the winemaking process. Absolutely nothing. The sixty year old Shiraz vines from Greenock that produced the original wine were ready to be uprooted due to the lack of yields and the reluctance of other companies to pay a premium for this excellent fruit. After repeated requests for access to these grapes,...
